They woke one morning in 2003 to find an order from American Airlines lying on the fax machine. Mike and Scott chose the latter, even though it was a bit risky. With most of our target market across the Pacific ocean in the U.S., Atlassian could either invest heavily in a traditional sales team or invest in building a self-service purchase experience. Jira is a play on “Gojira,” which is the Japanese title for the original 1954 Godzilla movie. *The leading bug tracker at the time was Bugzilla. So they built our own tracker, called it JIRA,* and quickly decided they were better off selling Jira than providing support services.

The bug-tracking software they were using wasn’t that great, either. It meant our co-founders (now co-CEOs) Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, were taking calls at all hours, which wasn’t much fun. 2002īuilding your own products beats fixing other people’s products.įun fact: Atlassian started as a company that supported other companies’ customer support teams.
